Bugs on Beech Hedge

Help please ......Does any one know what these are and how to get rid of it on a 40ft x8ft - last year it was a sticky mess but so far this is all that is there the full 40' length. image

    Hi Bugs,

    Have just answered your post regarding the variegated leaves and then found this one.

    Your problem here is woolly beech aphid and as these are sap-sucking insects may account for your mutated leaves.

    Indeed, wooly aphid. They won't hurt the hedge but you're right the stickiness isn't pleasant. I have them every year but blast them with the hose to keep numbers down. Try to discard fallen leaves in Autumn & the ones that have been held onto in Spring.
