Any Ideas for Plant Replacement?

Ree2Ree2 Posts: 31

Hello all,

I tried to have a lavender hedge bordering the part between my lawn and the wildlife bit of the garden, problem is it's under trees.

It gets filtered light in the morning, dappled throughout most the day and some light in the evening that goes under the trees. It's fairly dry soil because of the trees.

The lavender held up valiently but cannot cope with the lack of light.

Can anyone suggest something to replace the lavender? Something that keeps it's form in the winter, possibly flowers or interesting foliage?

Ta :)

There are some compact Berberis available - there's a fairly new one called 'Admiration' that would make a good low hedge.

Berberis is popular with the wildlife too.

If you want a nice hedging look, Lonicera Nitida can work. The Silver Beauty one offers really nice contrasting colours on the leaves with the usual flowers and small berries in autumn. The shrubs respond well the shaping and can survive quite tough soils. Provided it is not always in shade, they should work very well as a low hedge.
