To Chop or not to Chop

  • Wow, thanks everyone for the answers. Yes it looks great at the moment. My garden is full of it ( yes it's pretty invasive so I have to keep in top if it). i'll leave it a few more weeks and then give it the chop. It's in a sunny border so with a bit of feed and water hopefully I can keep it going. Thanks again ??

A large variety of Geraniums can flower and grow in varying amounts of light. This particular one (I think it's Oxonianum Wargrave) would be a good example of how it flowers and its leaves last by the amount of sun it gets and also if the soils are heavy or sandy. Chopping now tends to be if it gets lots of sun and if it is planted in very light soil. Another thing, if you plant very densely with minimal gaps, that also keeps the base areas quite cool which can also prolong flowering and keep the leaves fresh.

I had a border that had only 3/4 hours of sun and another border 6-7 hours of sun with same soil type and the one that had less sun grew slower but had fresher appearance and more deeper colours throughout the growing season. The cutting plan was only twice in the growing season, and the one that had lots of sun was cut 3 times in the year. For me, it wasn't always about the flowers, it's about the lovely leaves that often goes well with other neighbouring plants.
