Just curious......

Every year I grow at least 2 tall yellow sunflowers and sweet peas.  The sunflowers because even on dull summer days make me smile with their huge sunny heads, and sweet peas because of their colour and scent.  What 2 annuals/bedding plants do you feel epitomizes Summer?

    mesembryanthemeum criniflorum.

Not only the first botanical name I ever learned ( about 10 years old ) but also the first seeds I ever sowed.

A neighbour used to have them in her front garden when I was a child and I used to walk round and just gaze at them.

    Devon.

     Me too..
Along with Gazebo, Daydream, Dwarf Sonata and Xanthos~
Have to confess I gave all the Xanthos away - great 1st flush, but impossible to dead-head, so look a mess.

I was stunned when the flowers 1st appeared - you're right they do look sublime.
Problem is that the new flower buds are connected directly to the base of the flower you want to dead-head, so it's either cut the lot off, or have lots of brown dead-heads.
I have read that there is an improved Xanthos which doesn't have this problem, but I can't remember the name.

    Just remembered - it's Lemonade

To get back to the original thread question - there are so many!
I also have fond memories of mesembryanthemeum as a child, how the flowers open and close so quickly when the sun goes in and out.
Bedding Dahlias are a strong reminder of summer - so many bright colours

Calendula officianalis.the first flowers I ever noticed. I always like to have some but being orange, I have to be careful where I put them.

    In London. Keen but lazy.

The Cosmos Purity looks great and I have just the place for them. Can I plant/sow now or is it too late?
