Im interested to know how the exhibitors get accepted to show their gardens at Chelsea. Do they all submit plans and the best get selected, or is there a different way of deciding? Can anyone apply to enter the competition, or do you have to have won at other shows first?
I think we're in danger of the tail wagging the dog here. The RHS is for all members. The Chelsea Flower Show exists to raise funds to enable the RHS to provide services to all its members throughout the year.
To make the show the prime function of the RHS is a bit like saying that Oxfam exists to run second hand shops.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I have to say , I'm disappointed with all the RHS knocking.
OK , so Chelsea might not suit everyone. But as for the cost. As Dove has said, compare the entry price with that of football, Wimbledon , even a meal out, or a night at the cinema. Look at the prices charged by bands, big comedians and singers too if you go to see them.
The ticket money funds future developments it does not go into the pockets of CEOs and shareholders. Nobody gets rich out of the RHS.
Look at the major projects the RHS has going on at its gardens. New buildings going up at most of them , costing millions. Look at the new garden at Bridgewater: 154 acres of new garden . Where do folk suppose the money comes from?
If folk don't like the RHS, they're not compelled to be a member, visit the gardens or flower shows.
Hello , as ever , interesting thread , just goes to show everybody has a different views on what they like , personally I enjoyed watching Chelsea , even thought I didn't like all the gardens ?
I also think the RHS does a great job
Dovefromabove I thought that was Oxfam main purpose to run shops
The Maltese quarry garden, has attracted a massive amount of criticism.
Is it a garden: well it has a dining area and a swimming pool ?
It has no plants in.
Actually there were 172 different species, many of which are now becoming extinct in the wild, due to massive building in Malta, leading to a huge loss of water. There are no rivers on Malta.
I think there are more than enough reasons for it to be a Chelsea garden.
The RHS is a wonderful organisation, probably more now than it has ever been.
There is a new show this year, a major new garden will open in Manchester in 2 years time and they are doing a massive amount of work with kids, whilst also contributing to the debate on climate change.
Do I like the Maltese garden ?
Who cares ?
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Does any know what the yellow flower spike was on the BBC commentators stand, it was just behind monty / joe ? I couldn't get a good look at it , It looked to small to be a lupin, was think maybe a yellow baptisa?
