Problems with line feed on petrol strimmer

Hello, my first visit here. I have a large petrol strimmer, but the line  is either not feeding through or 'whizzing off' across the garden.  I have had the machine for 3 years and I wonder if it could be scoring on the line spool. Have tried taping over the grooves with tape but it hasn't helped. Any other suggestions other than buying a new spool for the machine?

    sounds like the spring inside the head might have gone, when you bump it on the floor, if it doesn't move you don't' get any line, if it depresses then it doesn't spring back and doesn't stop letting more line out.

    you might not need a full head just a new sprung spool

    Thank you, but as it doesn't have a 'touch and go ' system for line feed. Would that still apply?
