Coarse grass in lawn.

I have this coarse grass in the lawn and just want to know the best way to get rid of it.
It lies flat so unless I rake the lawn first it evades the mower,it also dries a bit like coarse straw.
At present I am just trying to dig out the bits as I see them (luckily my lawn is not huge!)
Is this the best way?

Annoying stuff, I tease it out with a knife as it pops up. I can't think of any other way. There is a selective herbicide for it, pinoxaden, but it's really hard to get hold of, and a bit OTT for a garden lawn I think.
Thanks I shall just go on as I am doing. As you say a herbicide is a bit OTT for a small lawn!
