Dead magnolia tree - cause?

Hello, my beautiful Magnolia stellata has died :-(
I remember it being fine and flowering last spring - then by August it looked dead. I read that sometimes Magnolias can just drop all their leaves for no reason but can then come back again. So to be sure, I left the tree until now to ensure it really was dead before cutting down. Unfortunately no signs of life and so we cut it down yesterday. I wondered if anyone could help me identify cause of death. The trunk has dark brown  patch in the middle (see picture) and the bark at the bottom near the ground is very soft and can be peeled off. Any advice greatly appreciated.

that looks like a fungal infection, were there any mushrooms nearby last autumn?

Hello, no def no mushrooms last autumn near the trunk or immediate vicinity. I know because we are quite a mushroomy garden & I usually take note & photos of them! It was a large tree & reasonably old - say 4/5 metres high & maybe 20 years +. Could it be old age?

I don't think old age killed it, magnolias can last hundreds of years,

the black mark in the centre of the trunk makes me think fungal infection, but I have no idea which of the couple of dozen it could be
