How to kill deep potato roots?

I have recently inherited a garden where there were a lot of potato plants. It just so happens this is in the main part of the garden where I would like to lay a lawn. I have dug out what seems like a never ending amount of potato roots but i am worried that they have spread even deeper because some of the roots I have dug out are so thick. Is there a root killer I can buy to ensure they all die before I lay the lawn next spring as I would hate for potatoes to ruin my lawn in the future?

Thanks for the help.

Yes unfortunately they are definitely potatoes from the pictures I have seen.  I am not that familiar with potato growing but if you are saying that I can live the roots in the ground and they won't grow back then that is great?

I would think that if there are potato shoots lurking in the soil the odd missed potato will grow up and if you keep cutting the foliage they will soon just die off.

I doubt if you need lots of deep digging .  Do you have a photo of the leaves to identify it?

potato plants VS lawn mower. No contest. No need to worry.

They sound more like bindweed roots. Even so, regular mowing will clear them.

If you want a perfect lawn laid next spring, let everything grow for a few weeks, then spray all top growth with glyphosate . That will go down in to the roots and kill off all dandelions, bindweed, docks, and other stuff that might ruin a lawn.
