What plant is this and what's happened to it?

What has happened to this pimagelant? The top, and back are fine, but the front seems to have lost its foliage. Any ideas as to how to restore to its former glory? image

Derek, it's privet and may have lost its leaves at that end due to being more exposed to cold wind over the winter.  I can see plenty of new shoots so think it will be fine.  However, it looks as though that section is being shadowed by the top which is overhanging it, so would trim the top back.

Ideally, a hedge should be wider at the bottom than at the top in a sort of "A" shape so bear that in mind when you trim it in the future.  Doing that allows light get to all of it and helps prevent the lower sections becoming thin on leaves.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

privet is very prone to honey fungus. Fingers crossed it's NOT.

    Devon.
  • I also find that a good feed of seaweed fertilizer greens up the privet in my garden.  It's great stuff.

Hosta fan, how can tell if it is or isn't honey fungus? And if it is, what can I do about it?
