Golden Jubilee Award

Jan BrownJan Brown Posts: 2

As a loyal and avid Gardeners' World fan I wanted very much to add my vote for the Golden Jubilee best plant award. How disappointed I was to find that, unless I agreed to give the BBC lots more personal information about myself, my only other option was to be logged out which meant that I could not vote for the award. I find this to be very subversive and underhand and I do not wish to be forced into giving additional information about myself online so therefore I cannot vote. Shame on you BBC; this is disgraceful.

Jan, this Forum is not run by BBC. Maybe complain to the BBC about it?

The voting for the Jubilee plant is on the GW section of the Beeb website and you have to register to vote and that means giving information.  I've had a BBC ident for years so am not bothered but I can't vote cos I'm not in the UK.

Any complaints about the system need to be made to the Beeb and not here as neither this forum nor the magazine to which it is linked is part of the Beeb.

I too have had a BBC ident for years. I really don't remember giving any more info about myself to the BBC than I did to sign on with this forum, which the OP seems to have done. All details are governed by Data Protection laws and if you don't want them used for marketing or other purposes all you have to do is tick the appropriate box, just as you do when ordering stuff online.

It seems reasonable for the BBC to try to ensure that people can't set up multiple identities and attempt to skew the vote, otherwise what's the point?

If you don't want to give these details it's a personal choice and of no great importance to anyone but yourself.

I have to say I agree with the original poster. I had to sign in recently to listen to the Archers on catchup .....I have been doing this for years, but they have recently changed the rules.  Not sure why they needed my date of birth and postcode image.  I think its because they are about to launch new digital services at the BBC, and they are in data collection mode, but I found it a bit odd.  Just one more data store there for the hacking image

Maybe it is a way that will be used in the future to check that people who use i-player etc., have a TV licence.

That'll be why I had an email from them recently - summat about an update to their policy blah, blah, blah. It was filed carefully in the spam .....image

I don't like half the choices they've made anyway so I doubt I'll be voting!

And am I the only person in the country that hates that r***y geranium Rozanne? image

And bedding!  At least Rozanne is useful if you need a spreading sort of geranium to fill a space but always in full sun or it flops everywhere and looks ungainly.   I'd have gone for geraniums if she hadn't gone for Rozanne.   Certainly wouldn't be grasses, and not just because they were Joe Swift's choice.!
