Vermin

I recently found a large rat drowned in my waterbutt.

Knowing the diseases that rats can carry, is it safe to use this water on my garden or should I tip it down the drain ?

Thanks,  John.

I think the water should be okay on the garden, just don't put it on areas people will have direct cintact, like lawns, wash fruit and veg, sensible stuff.

If it's an open tank, prop a long stick into it so any birds/mice/rats can climb out and escape if they fall in.

All my water butts and bins have lids, nothing gets in them I would hate for a bird or cat to drown in one.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

I think a lid on a water butt is a good idea to safeguard any living thing from drowning

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply.

I like the stick idea.  I will do that.

Dear Goodness !! I think I would prefer a lid rather than a stick to help the vermin out after it's swim , probably emptying its bowels and bladder as it does the back stroke !!
