Best Choice for Dog Run

INRNINRN Posts: 1

Good morning everyone!  I'm hoping you can share your expertise with me. I have an approximately 15x15 dog area on the back corner of my house. I need to landscape about 25' of it to hide the space. It's contained by a split rail fence. My landscaper has suggested hicks yews but I'm concerned they're too slow growing. I had inquired about some laurels but the landscaper thinks they'll be out of control in a couple years.

-Northwest Indiana

-North side of home

-Grow at least 4'

-Year round foliage

Any thoughts on the best way to go?????

The downside of Yew is that the berries are supremely toxic, so should your dog(s) get hold of one it might not end very well.

With slow-growing varieties once established it's much less effort than laurel to maintain its shape so really it's up to your preference of quick win vs easier long term maintenance.

There are ways to slow the rate growth or help speed it up, and of course with Laurel at least you can coppice it, so when you are cutting it back you don't need to be particularly delicate, thus it's faster.

There are tonnes of options, have a flick through here, it's a UK site but it'll probably give you some good ideas [https://www.hedgesdirect.co.uk/acatalog/Right_Species.html]
