Rose and clematis combinations

lucy261lucy261 Posts: 16

Hello!

Ive decided on planting a climbing rose on a north east facing wall. I really like David Austin 'the generous gardener' im wondering if anyone could suggest a purple clematis to grow with it that doesn't mind shade. It will get a small amount of sun in the morning.

Im tempted by the yellow and purple combo too!

so exciting ????????

thank you very much

Etoile Violette is a cracking clematis - strong purple flowers over a long period and good for any aspect.

Given the right planting conditions and spring feeding she goes from strength to strength producing more stems ever year.  She will look fabulous with Teasing Georgia but may well make Generous Gardener look insipid.  If you like GG, try a softer purple such as Blue Angel which is a very good clematis for a NE aspect.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Fabulous thank you so much. I love the look of teasing Georgia so I may get that too. Do you think James Galway or Gertrude jekyll could look nice with etoile violette? Or any other combinations that you know of, I was hoping for a pink rose but not too bright.

    Thank you very much :-)

I agree with Obelixx, it would look to deep in contrast I think. You can't go wrong with Gertrude Jekyll, it's a great rose with a smashing scent. I think it would look great with EV.

I also grow Etoile Violete and this year am trying to grow it through the Rose Grace, we'll see how that turns out.

I saw these in my local garden centre this morning. The first one is called dazzle if you cant quite see the label. Do you think these would complement the generous gardener nicely? Has anyone had any experiences with these varieties?

    Thank you

You've given me a great idea, we've got a Malvern Hills climbing rose and that last lilac clematis will look great with the pale yellow.

Given your rose is a pale pink, have you thought I'd pairing it with a bright yellow? From a quick search of AGM clematis, maybe this kind of thing?

    Just an idea!

So sorry I've only just seen your reply here.

im glad that's given you some inspiration! That pairing would look beautiful. I ordered clematis fujimusume, hopefully it will look nice together. I've also just ordered teasing Georgia! Can't help myself! It's to go a little further along the wall so just trying to decide whether to pair it with a white or purple clematis! Because of the aspect it limits me a little.

Thank you very much for your advice and suggestion ?

Lucy - if you take a look at the specialist growers online, you'll find hundreds of different types of clematis  in all colours and sizes to suit your needs. The three most of us here use are Taylor's, Throncroft and Hawthorne's. image

Garden centres, and even nurseries, tend to stock popular products and therefore not a huge range as it wouldn't be possible when they have so many plants to sell.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thank you fairygirl  ? I can't believe how many there are! I ended up ordering one from Taylor's the other day as that is exactly what I was finding, Much easier when you're after something specific.

    Thanks
