I've got several acers in the garden and i really like my 'Red Dragon', but i think my favourite is a Katsura that i rescued from the sale section at my local garden centre for £5

Good post! I'm obsessed with Acers at the moment and have bought a Katsura and a Palmatum Dissectum recently from a nursery. The Katsura is beautiful although it did have an ant farm in its root ball! I also rescued a couple of unloved seed grown young acers from a florist the other week, £3 for the 2... worth a shot. I also have a bonsai acer which I am unsure of variety and a Bloodgood that I found under a load of other bushes in my landlords front garden last year, it looked partially dead! I placed it in a pot in a sheltered position and this year it looks superb, so happy with it.
That said, I have decided my favourite acer (and next purchase if I can get my wifes agreement) is.....

Waaaah love that pinky-yellow to green tree, any idea what it is Doghouse Riley?
Is it Sango-Kaku? I like the regular green variety truth be told; let the lovely natural form do the talking and ring the changes with autumn colour.
So far I have accumulated 5 acers.
I have 2 orange dreams. I purchased 1 last year which is really happy under my large sycamore tree.
I then rescued a wilting large one for 99p at Morrisons a few weeks ago. It was reduced from a tenner. Its about 2-3ft high.
My favourite though is the plum/red one (garnet or crimson queen I can't remember) that DoghouseRiley has 2 of in his back garden. I've got one myself in the front garden but it's still only a couple of years old.

Who doesn't love an Acer-fest! The one on the left is Sango Kaku, stunning bark in Winter, a bit like Cornus Midwinter Fire, the red one is Bloodgood. Would love Osakazuki and Shirawasanum, although no more room in that bed.
I love them all. Unfortunately I do not know the names of my cultivars but I have 3 palmatums in pots, 3 large specimens by my pond and 2 dwarf/weeping varieties.

That's really useful on the training idea. We got a Skeeter's Broom variety early this year, saw it discounted and remembered it on the programme last year. But it is a bit of a mess, stalks all over the place.
Really tempted to get a Sango-Kaku, looks pretty damn good in a border!
