Climber or rambling rose??

Jennifer80Jennifer80 Posts: 39

Hi

I have a south east facing wall at the front of the house.  I know nothing about roses but want to grow a rose up some trellis.  Should I buy a rambling rose or a climber? And any suggestions as to which one please?

All help gratefully received.

There are climbing roses that barely get bigger than 2.5 metres hig and wide and ramblers that will get to 10m.  generally speaking, climbers have stiffer stems and are not as rampant and are repeat flowerers unless you go for old-fashioned roses.

Ramblers are more flexible so easier t train on arches and other structures and there are now repeat flowering ramblers available form places like David Austin.

Your choice will depend on the area to be covered and the colour desired and the size of support you plan to use.

I have several GJ bush roses, they are beautiful and have one of the finest scents of any rose

I have a rambling rector (tiny white very scented flowers, lots of them.over an arch over a path, with some pruning it behaves itself. Also a pale yellow over the shed was bought as golden showers, but is not that, its a rambler like rector very pretty flowers from May to October, but no smell.agree with Obelixx, if you want quick and lots of cover its the rambler.

ah pansyface, you should have kept rector under control LOL, especially if you want to pick and eat the pears! Small neat isnt going to cover a house wall.

Avoid the rector unless you have a HUUUGE  space to fill.

I once lived in a terrace in a dead dodgy area ....... there was a back gate onto an alley frequented by Ne'er do wells ......... I planted a Rambling Rector against the back wall ........ best legal defence against intruders I could think of .......... I sometimes feel tempted to go back and check to see whether or not the rose has totally taken over all of the alley and the back gardens all along the street image

Oooh Dove perhaps the ne'er do wells are entrapped in the rose LOL, well, I can only say, I must have a VERY well behaved Rector then!  He gets a cut once a year, some horse poo autumn and spring, and he is happy I am happy!
