Mango Plant

Torg22Torg22 Posts: 302

Hi,

Ive started growing a mango from a pit here in my office in London (I think my colleagues think im a bit strange). It is being grown suspended above water at present with the tap root well submerged. The seedling is now 3-4 inches in height with a few little leaves.

My question is, can the mango carry on growing in water or will it eventually give up the ghost and die. I should repot it into soil but a) it means I have to bring in a pot with soil and b) in soil it will need water while I am away on holidays occasionally and I cant rely on anyone to do it!

No idea how to answer your question but sounds interesting. Any chance of a pic when you have a moment? I like to grow random things after I've eaten them as well and had good runs with Avocado and Pineapple in the past!

Yeh sure will do so in a little while (watch this space).

It started sprouting almost immediately after I submerged it in water. Looks completely fine and healthy although it has slowed down a tad in growing. That said its only about a month old.

Ive got an avocado at home too and its great, I pinched out the top and its quite short and stumpy how I wanted it to be.  This is in soil though unlike the mango.

I fear it will eventually die.
At the moment the pit is providing all the nutrients for your plant. They will soon be used up and when there's no more the plant dies.
Plant it asap in something like John Innes no2 or no3.
Don't expect mangoes unless you have a greenhouse the size of Kew :)

    Hi pete,

Thanks for your advice. Perhaps I will sneak in some soil to the office then :)

Its ok... not expecting any fruit at all. Just experimenting and love growing stuff from things you would normally chuck in the bin,

    Good luck with it.

As a kid I used to sow all sorts of things from seed found in fruit etc
I did have a small grapefruit tree from a seed I sowed in 1968! I had it for many years, but then I became a teenager....

I see.. a grapefruit tree wasn't probably the first thing on your mind as a teenager! ;)

Here's a pic of it. Its not liking the weather today, very dreary.

Very cool Torg, I might have to pick up a couple of mangos in this weeks shop!

Yes do so! Don't forget to prise the seed out of the harder shell.

  • How cool! My friend grew one of these years ago and it looked like a mini palm as it grew.
