Planting leeks in a raised bed

CapelglynCapelglyn Posts: 24

Hi

I am planting a 12 x 3 foot raised bed with leeks and beyond the obvious two rows which would give me 18 leeks planted at six inch centres and 12 inches between rows, I wondered if I could plant more, but still get a decent crop? My garden is narrow so all my beds are three food wide to accommodate the four crop rotation. All ideas and suggestions would be most welcome.

I squeeze mine in a bit tighter, allowing room for the width of my rake head between rows so I can get in and out easily with my favourite double edged Wolf hoe head.   That's about 9 inches which would give you extra rows.

Okay thanks. So if your bed is 36 inches wide how far from the edge do you plant to get an extra row?

For leeks and onions I plant 4" in (wide enough for the cultivator head to pass) and plant 4 to 6" apart but I would make the rows across the short width, not the long.  That's how you'd get more rows in.
