Monarda in Container

WateryWatery Posts: 388

I have some concrete/stone urns about a foot square.  I was planning to put a dahlia in each one after the tulips go over but I've kind of gone off the dahlias and not sure that's what I want to see when I look out the window.

I've just bought a Monarda Cambridge Scarlet and wondered if that would grow/look ok in such a container.   One problem is I bought it quite small...a 9 cm plant so I'm not sure it will come to much this year.  I didn't originally buy it for the container and I hate to spend ££ on 2 litre plants when a little patience will get me more for less.

I've never manage to grow any before when I tried from seed. I read they like lots of air and not too much crowding, so I thought a pot might work well.

Any advice?

It should do fine in a container but the leaves often become unattractive as the summer progresses and for this reason I grow mine in the borders. Also, they are very hungry plants and will need some organic matter in the container with them, they also seem to like a fair bit of water. I think I did'nt water the one I grew in a container enough last year and it got powdery mildew. As to not buying a big one, don't worry, they grow quite quickly. Good luck, they're great plants to have in the garden.

Thank you.  That's helpful about the leaves.  Maybe the dahlia after all!
