Crack in base of water butt

Hello,

I've got a water butt made by Plysu (who no longer trade).

There is a crack in the bottom and as a result, nothing is collecting in it.

Can anyone advise on how to repair it?

Many thanks!

  • Good idea, but then will have to drill another hole for the tap.

Also, will have to get some pretty strong glue so it doesn't leak.

    Thanks though.

Line it with a sheet of damp proof membrane (DPM - basically thick polythene) from a builder's merchants?

  • Ahh, yes I could try that.

    Thanks!

Silicone sealant should do the job.

  • I've got some of that for the bathroom.  Will that do the job?

    Thanks!!!

I had a similar problem Metalmama, I had a split where the tap connected and tried various things including silica based sealant. This worked fine until the butt was full, then the pressure of the water forced it's way through. It's a different story when a sealant is in permanent immersion. I bought a new butt in the end, half price in a sale.

  • Thank you for that!

If you empty and completely dry the interior, the seal adhesive tape used for flashings might do the job.  You would need to check that it's OK for plastic.

Honestly - just put a big plastic bag in it and tape that round the top edges to stop it 'slumping' when it's full.

Take the inside flange off the tap first. Drop a plastic sheet in and include a bit of slack so it can fill out properly. Then very carefully make a small hole where the tap is (point of a very sharp knife) and push that over the inside spigot. Then put the flange back on on the inside of the plastic liner with a wrap of ptfe tape just to be sure. Tape all round the top edge of the barrel to hold the sheet in place. Job's a good 'un. The sheet will hold the water, the barrel will hold the sheet and stop it cracking in the sunlight. If you get good thick polythene (like DPM) it'll last for years.

  • Raisingirl, this is great! Thank you, am going to see what I've got in terms of thick plastic bags.
