Hello - your friends plum trees are probably grafted onto a smaller rootstock to keep them in check.  Your cuttings will probably one day grow to be enormous.

hi thanks for the reply Forestedge

i think your right about grafted part because the main tree is burgundy in colour with burgundy fruit , the tree/bush i got a cutting off is sticking out of the side of the large tree trunk that will have yellow then red fruit soon,  so having a enormous tree in a pot does not sound to good , can i prune the tree every year to keep it smell about 6ft or will it be better just to plant it in the garden .

    thanks

It'll struggle in a pot. It's a native tree of sizeable proportions and they like a wide root run, like all the cherries and plums.  You'll be ok for a few years, but watering and feeding will be your main problem, then keeping it in check.  Summer prune, as it's a plum, but just a tidy up to keep it in check and not to lose any fruits that form. Bear in mind that the fruit is only good for wine. It's small and rather insipid to taste.  If it's the red leafed form (prunus cerasifera 'Nigra') then the flowers will be a washed out pink. The leaves colour best in the sun

    HI

thanks for the info Hortum-cretae, you have made my mind up there going in the garden,  yes the prunus cerasifera 'Nigra (burgundy leaves and fruit) is not very nice but the (myrobalan; Prunus cerasifera;) i think thats the name ) that has a very white flower and green leaves and is the best plum i have ever tasted  . the prunus cerasifera 'Nigra is more like a tree  and the myrobalan; Prunus cerasifera is more like a hedge  growing out of the side of the tree ???

    thanks
