Onion plant

seyfadesseyfades Posts: 146

I started my onion sets in modules in January and transplanted them in February, I am growing the onions in 14 inches deep containers,  I mulched the onions about 3 weeks ago with spent mushroom compost (possibly a mistake?) which covered the  bulb, at the time of mulching, the onion stems were about 15 inches long.

Because I didn't see any bulb forming above the mulch, I took one of the plants out and saw no bulbs at the bottom.

I am new to gardening and learning from my mistakes as I go along.

Does anyone know where I went wrong  or is it just too early for the bulb to start forming.

    It is too early.

They looked fine, each leaf adds another layer to the onion bulb. You probably want in excess of 10 leaves before there is a decent size bulb.

Thank you fidgetbones, I didn't know that, I will count the leaves later today

You need to learn patience.  You won't get harvestable onions for 2 or 3 months yet.   Keep the soil between them hoed to reduce competition from weeds for water and nutrients so they can grow in peace.

You'll see when they have swollen bulbs ... they begin to push out of the ground ...

take a look here - if you look at the onions still in the ground you can see the bulbs.

Just keep them weeded and watered as Obelixx has said  ... no need to count leaves image
