Mares tail!!

  • I've suffered from this dreaded weed for a number of yrs now & finally i think i may have found a control for it. I got told that salt on snapped off stems kills it so i have been doing that which has stunned it a lot. Then i thought I'd pour boiling water over other patches of it that hadn't been treated with salt, which I'm glad to say dried it out after a couple of days & it seems to not be growing back yet, so hopefully fingers crossed i can have a garden back. Get the kettle on I'd say.

  • We recently had our garden cleared with a digger, flower beds created and the rest covered in membrane before laying chips. Within a few  weeks we started to see the occasional dreaded green stuff coming through. There had been some in the garden originally. My husband has started with a treatment that seems to be working but is probably not suitable for large areas. It involves him on hands and knees, with a scalpel, splitting the stems as they appear, carefully scraping the protective outer surface, and soaking with a proprietary weedkiller like Resolve. So far the treated areas remain clear. We are hoping that this method will get right down to the roots. Probably a bit anal for most folks but he ain't gonna be beaten!

Hammer the stems to break the surface before you brush the stuff on. I use an old paint brush and gloves. Kurtail and its associated chemicals  is probably the only product which will work.

Do not rotovate! Kill all stems you can see before digging.

Why it is only available under licence or whatever I do not know.

I understood the ammonium sulphamate is potentially no more chemically poisonous than many other pest or hebicides. You do need to be careful how you use it taking usual precautions.

You are permitted to use it as a compost accellerant!  Now work that one out.

    Lot's more info on t'internet.

    Hi There,

Just after a bit of advise really.

i have circa 25m² pebbled area in my garden which is becoming covered in marestail!! this stuff just seems to keep on growing. I have had it sprayed twice now with kurtail and the weeds turned black and looked asif they we're dying, now more green ones have started growing around the dead ones!!

I was told to membrane over the old pebbles / dead weeds and lay new pebbles on top, are the maretails just going to grow straight through the new stuff?

These weeds are driving me crazy i need rid of them, any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Hi All, I Have completetly ridded myself of Mares tail and am now 2 years free. Amonium Sulphamate crystals are what you need. Dilute in water and spray on, wait 2 weeks then go again. The ones sprayed wont be seen again and the ryzomes will be heavily weakened. Keep an eye out the following spring - they will be back but barely, then repeat.
