Scented annuals please

debs64debs64 Posts: 5,184

Hi all, I have some planters that are on legs and want to fill them with scented plants, they are not big and deep so think mostly annuals, can anyone recommend scented ones? I have scented petunia and nemesia and dianthus any others? Twinny antirrinhium are advertised as fragrant but I have my doubts anyone tried them? Hope you can help!

I'm trying to grow "zaluziansskya",  night scented phlox.  Apparently the scent is intoxicating in the evenings, the flowers are tiny though. I think Runnybeak has it in her garden.

Maybe some dwarf sweet peas might work, left to trail over the sides. I've read that people have put them in hanging baskets.  I grew " bijou" in a pot a couple of years ago, very pretty and only grew approx 1ft high on a small frame support.

You can put sweet peas in almost any container if you keep them well fed and watered. You don't have to stick with making a frame for them to climb on either. They'll go up ...then fall if there's no support. Like a waterfall effect. I grew some on my back fence last year which has a 'window box' along it. I've done it  the same way in big pots too  image

Nicotiana have a delicious scent. They can grow quite tall but this year I'm growing a  slightly dwarf strain. Can't wait to see if it's as good as it's big brother.

Also love the spicy smell of stocks.

Kitty, I can recommend Zaluzianskya. I have just taken some more cuttings off my parent plants. Once you have smelt it you will never be without it - its fab! Not reliably hardy though and I over winter my old plants in the greenhouse (unheated). Strangely enough it has a rather unpleasant 'chemically' smell during the daylight hours.

Good ideas thanks I have some Zalu whatsit phlox in my basket just waiting for payday and polianthes tuberosa bulbs in pots too, will definitely try the sweet pea idea if I can get some young plants as all mine are merrily romping up their tripods in the garden. Thanks

night scented stocks are also a lovely fragrance. Tiny plants, easy from seed

Sound good raisin girl if I sprinkle a few seeds now should have flowers soon and like the phlox it's a good reason to sit outside with a glass of wine in the evening

Night scented stock would be my choice too raisingirl, and they are easy to grow from seed or buy plug plants.

  • one favourite of mine is alyssum - always have them in the window boxes etc - and every time you brush pass - mmm loverly ! have some in modules in the tunnel for country market and every time i water , a beautiful scent fills the tunnel . simple plant , but very effective image
