Garden Pond edging and planting renovations

I understand the best time to do any work on tidying up a pond is in the autumn as it minimises the risk to the wildlife, however, I also plan to dig up and move around some of the plants around it and also put in some better pond edging which will include placing rocks to line the edge of the pond and make it a bit more natural looking. The plan is also to increase the amount of nooks and crannies for the frogs and other wildlife. Would it be better to leave that until next spring or feasible to do that in autumn too, before it all settles down for the winter. Around the pond at the moment is a number of harts tongue ferns, Siberian irises (which are currently in flower), Carex, and Liriope Mascari as bits of the pond are in shade all thru' the year.
Don't laugh - but also have some Sedums (Autumn Joy) planted next to the pond which were put in temporarily just to get them in the ground 4 years ago, and have stayed ever seen. My late horticultural friend called them my Water Sedums.
Something tells me I should keep them in there in her memory as seeing them always reminds me of her and makes me smile.

Hi Tim. I have a pond in need of some tlc and I will be starting to clear out some of the overgrown plants that are actually in the pond.now (weather permitting). As long as I leave the removed plants near the edge of the pond for a day or so any creatures can find their way back into the water. I haven't had any frog spawn this year. Whay a lovely way to remember your friend and if the Sedum is happy then why not leave it?
