Yes it remains from the stone age days, but I've heard several times that its also a very use full plant.apart from being a menace it was used as a effective pan scourer. . ,(though I've forgotten what magic the plant contains .)
through away your pan scrubbers .a hand full of this works wonders!!!!!! !.......... (so they say!!!!)
Not much point trying to dig it up as each teeny bit of root just makes more plants and they go down very deep anyway - far deeper than you or I can dig. Just keep hoeing the tops and gathering up every scrap. You can then leave it on a paved area to dry out completely before binning or you can do as M-U suggests and make a stinky tea for your veggies.
