Hanging Basket Plants for Shade.
in Plants
I have used trailing begonias and lobelia very successfully, but would like alternative ideas for deep shade for a hanging basket. Facing north and never gets any sun. It would be hanging above an enormous hosta. Has anyone else come across this challenge and conquered it?

I have grown trailing fuchsias on a north facing wall tho they did get late evening sun in high summer. Impatiens would do well if you get the New Guinea ones that are resistant to the recent problems.
You could try a fern with variegated ivy if you don't need masses of colour. Heucheras and ajuga reptans could add foliage colour and texture contrast.

The heucheras are permanently in the baskets which face north.
Thank you Joyce and Obelixx - I have just looked up Heucheras and one called Northern Exposure Lime looks very eye catching and would be very suitable.
Joyce - what is the green leafed plant in your third heuchera picture?
It's a Brunnera. In the summer I put white bacopa round the edges to lighten the basket.
I also have a north facing hanging basket - have a Heucherella in it. I think it's sunrise falls - it's a trailing one.
Andy, the one in my first pic is a trailing one which I have cut back to get new growth.
Thanks to all of you - it seems that many heuchera are a winner on north aspects so your replies have been greatly appreciated as I didn't know that trailing ones were available.
Forestedge, if you decide on heucheras, remember to treat them against vine weevil in autumn and spring.
Oh - are they susceptible Joyce?
They are but I have not lost any and have had them now for a few years.
