Silk Tree/Albizia julibrissin

Guernsey Donkey2Guernsey Donkey2 Posts: 6,713

I have sown some of these Silk Tree seeds a week or so ago, the packet said allow 1 - 3 months for germination.  Some are now already approx. 1 cm tall.  Has anyone grown these successfully into mature shrubs/trees?  I love the look of them from the picture on the packet and I think I have seen them growing locally. Can anyone share their experiences of these plants with me?

We inherited one here.   I have pruned it to raise the canopy.

It does look lovely Obelixx, and I am happy to have a go with it, but just wonder if it will be able to withstand our temperatures and wind.  However, early days yet, and if I can get it to continue progressing at this rate the plant will soon need potting on again. I have to overwinter it in temps above 5 degrees before planting out next year.

Ours is just coming into leaf now.  It's clearly a mature specimen so has had no problems with our -6C frosts this winter.   They are quite common round here so I assume withstand strong winds, heavy rain, strong sun, droughts and all sorts.

That's all reassuring Obelixx, it seems that they are fairly hardy and our temp never dipped that low this past winter.

I would imagine I will have to wait a year or two before planting out though.  I will see how fast it grows.  I had plug clematis last year which grew so well in our conservatory that we were able to plant them out at just 6 months old, so who knows how quickly this Silk Tree will grow in the right conditions.
