Pruning Weigela

madpenguinmadpenguin Posts: 2,543

I didn't prune my weigela last year so although it is flowering right now it looks a bit scraggy.

When the flowers are over can I just give it a go over with the shears or do I have to be a bit more 'precise' about it?

I usually reduce by 1/3 and clip off dead stems etc straight after flowering is over. Some people may take a few of the older stems back to the ground to encourage fresh growth.

I just use my electric hedge trimmers on both of mine. I have a variegated one which is looking beautiful at the moment - covered in pink flowers which the bees are loving - and a deep red one called Bristol Ruby which flowers later.

I have weigela varigata florida and Bristol ruby as well. For a variegated shrub it is very hard to beat with its arching habit. Bristol ruby has an abundance of red flowers that seem to last a long period. I prune both after flowering taking a third off new growth and reduce some branches to the base. They both look good in late spring and early summer with good flowering
