Aphids on my wineberries? (and what to do if so?)

Hi all

I noticed that one of my wineberry plants has some leaves that are turning black... On closer inspection, there are some small green insects on the underside of these leaves. A quick google has got me to thinking that they are likely aphids.

Can anyone confirm whether they are definitely aphids?  And if they are, what can be done - organically speaking :)  ?  I have removed the "infected" leaves, but this is the first encounter I have had with aphids (if that's what they are), so I'm not sure if it is inevitable from here whether they'll soon take over the whole plant?

Many thanks

Max

Yes, aphids.  Blast them off using the 'jet' setting on a hose spray.  The aphids won't have caused the blackened leaves though - that was probably frost damage.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

OK, thanks for the info and the help.  So the jet spray won't end up damaging the plant (snapping stems, etc) you don't think?

Keep the water pressure reasonable Max - we're not talking pressure washer levels here!  image

Start low and test - if it removes the aphids it's high enough.

Well, I'm glad I tested it first before using it on the wineberries.  I think the pressure might have been too much; for the smaller leaves at least...
