kohlrabi

Kohlrabi seems to be what's germinating this year. Any tips? How pest resistant is it? And how quickly does it mature? How hardy? I'm planning to plant out the first lot this weekend or later in the week (In York, last frost date about now.

It's one of the easier brassicas, bookmonster.  If you have woodpigeons about then you'll need to protect the young plants or they'll quickly be gobbled up.  Other than that I don't have any problems with them.  Note that they grow fast and some varieties go a bit woody if left to grow too large (picked at tennis ball size is best) so I sow several batches a few weeks apart.  They are hardy enough to be planted out now but harden them off for a week first.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks! They've been hardening out, so I'll get batch 1 or part of it in the soil today, and batch 2 in the coldframe, and dig out the netting

I've had issues with flea beetle and slugs, but it's very hardy and fast maturing. I grew a purple one last year (Modrava) and it wasn't tough right up to 20cm across, after that it was a bit woody at the base.. I did however plant them all at once. which was a terrible idea!
