Russet apple espalier training
in Fruit & veg
Hi all,
I would be very grateful for any advice offered regarding the pruning of a Russet apple tree.
I bought the tree online, and was assured it would be suitable, but it looks nothing like the tree I saw on the website!
The bottom two branches look suitable for training on the bottom wire (15" or so up) but after that, I'm not sure.
Attached are pics of the tree, which I decided to go ahead and plant, as I was going round in circles with the seller.
Thanks in advance for any info.
Peter

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Hello, and thank you both for the excellent links. Looks like I am going to have to be pretty hard on this tree!
I'd be grateful for your take on the proposal below. Basically cutting away any branches not required. Leaving the two lower ones to be tied to the wire now at 60 degrees, and 90 degrees in August.
That just leaves the leader, which I can notch at the height of the second wire. Grateful for any feedback.
Regards,
Peter
Yes it does seem drastic but thats how I trained my pear. We had our first fruit last year
This year is looking good so far

Wow, that looks great! Thanks for the advice. Will summon up the courage shortly, and go at it.
