How to make use of grass cut

PageZPageZ Posts: 87

Dear Garden Gurus,

I hope you are enjoying the sunny days recently.

How to make use of grass cut is a puzzle to me.

I usually gather the grass in a compost bin but now I have too much green stuff than brown so maybe they are not going to decompose well? I notice the cut grass becomes sort of grass mat.

Can you please advice on it? Many thanks! image

add old newspaper, torn into strips, or cardboard ( wet it first ) or any old junk mail etc.

Hi Hostafan. I thought the paper with ink is not good for compost? That's why I run out of brown stuff. image

total tosh.image  I use it all the time.

The only paper/ cardboard I don't use is the very shiny cardboard.

Haha I see! Thanks for letting me know. I will spend a good hour or two on the weekend tearing papers. image

    right ,OCD time.

You'll find that newspaper tears nicely into long ribbons in one direction only. Either top to bottom, or side to side. The Times is side to side, but Sunday Times is top to bottom. You'll see what I mean when you do it.

    Am I just too weird?

You could also leave the clippings on the lawn as in this article:-

Hi Penguin. Thanks! I tried it once but found the clippings tend to stick on my shoes and clothes a lot when I walked on the lawn. I do not have a path so I walk on the lawn too often to avoid it.

I have a hot compost bin and it turns grass to mulch in 4 weeks and into lovely compost in 3 months.

Highly recommended and quite addictive - I check the temperature on mine every day - currently running at 70 degrees centrigrade

They are not cheap but  a fascinating garden gadget.

We even composted a pair of jeans in 4 months!
