Clematis Montana

I have a well established Clematis Montana which is flowering away at the moment. Its roots are shaded and its head in the sun - as much as we get here. However, I was disturbed to see recently that some stems had shrivelled up and looked dry and dead. I watered well, fed with wormery compost and liquor and waited to see. It looks as if more have gone the same way, so I have as carefully as possible taken out the dead stems making sure not to damage the flowering.

It looks as if the damage is starting at the tips strangely. What could be going on here, and what can I do as a remedy please?

Sounds like frost damage to me.  They can be susceptible to late frosts damaging new foliage and flowers.   It should recover if only the tips have been affected.

My thoughts too Obelixx ... late frost damage ... there's a lot of it about image

Thank you for your comments. I had thought this most unlikely as we've had no sign of frost here, but I suppose it could have happened in the dead of night when I wasn't looking!

Some plants have suffered from a very chilly wind which swept down from the Arctic ... it didn't exactly cause a frost but it certainly damaged a lot of young tender growth, particularly where plants were peeking above protecting walls and fences ... sounds as if that may be the cause of your poorly clematis ... if so it'll recover image
