advice needed on bay trees and butterfly bush

hello,

I'm very beginner to gardening. I received two bay trees for free from a restaurant, I changed them the compost (innes 3) and repotted them but they are still not looking healthy. The leaves have torn sports and are browning.

Also I potted a butterfly bush I bought from Lidl. But it is not growing well. The new leaves quickly become brown and dry looking. Also wanted to check if my blackcurrant needs help, it has small yellow spots on the leaves.

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thank you,

The bays are probably just suffering from a bit of cold and change of environment. I'd simply snip off any damaged leaves.

Cut all the raggy bits back on the buddliea. To be honest - it doesn't need to be in a pot that size either. That won't help it establish - it's a tiny plant. It'll discard some foliage as it tries to make roots.  They like free draining soil, so don't overwater - even in a pot. Make sure it's up off the ground for drainage.

Can't help you with the blackcurrant, but if you've got water on the foliage during sunny spells, that can cause a bit of superficial damage. Always water plants at the base, especially when it's sunny - don't spray the foliage.   They're pretty tough, so it's unlikely to be anything serious  image

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • thank you for your response! I did what you advised, however the leaves on one of the by trees are really pointing down and the plant is still looking unhealthy. Do you think it just needs time or shall I repot it or do something again? image

You could try spraying thebay tree leaves with a diluted seaweed fertiliser.
