Hi, brand new to this so please be gentle.
Can someone tell me what this is and how to not kill it.

It's a Rhododendron - not sure of the type. It prefers acid soil, although I've seen them looking healthy enough on neutral soil. So if you're on acid soil, it's going to do well; if on neutral soil it will be fine with a top up of ericaceous compost, if on alkaline (chalky) soil, best in a pot with ericaceous compost. They like partly shaded spot, where they don't get blazing sun, but ideally not dense shade.
