Thanks everyone for your input and advice - I do really appreciate it. Coming through loud and clear to get professional advice and not let my husband and couple of friends hire a digger and do their own thing! The expense is taken on board too!
Our bungalow had an almost identical slope. We have two terraces above the patio level, using both brick and railway sleepers for retaining walls. Some of the railway sleepers are now hidden by Cotoneaster. We have found straight brick walls least effective, due to subsidence. Highly arched bricks walls work well, much stronger, and railway sleepers are also very effective, as they have some give in them, without showing cracks. Have lots more photos of before and after, PM me if you would like to know more about how we did it.
