Small Tree I.D.

I see this little tree everywhere in front gardens and it is lovely, particularly in Spring.

What's the name, as I cannot recall it at all and wanted to plant one myself?

Does it need a lot of maintenance to keep that lovely shape?

Thank you.

One of my favourites, and easy to maintain if you want it a bit smaller. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks Fairygirl - it is just glorious! Do you trim it lightly after flowering?

You can just take individual stems out to keep a nice free shape - especially the ones which grow upwards. Take out stems right back to the main trunk - anything weak or rubbing- to keep the shape you want and to keep longer branches off the ground.  You might get some 'runners' coming from lower down as they're usually grafted, but you just tear them off  rather than pruning them.

I dislike when people just shave them round the bottom so that they look like toadstools...some people do that with Acers as well. Hideous   image

  • I agree - especially with acers, as it's precisely that asymmetrical willowiness that I love about them.

Thanks fairy, good to have these tips for when I get one, some day.
