Garden Visits 2017

A few photos of the Bishop's Palace gardens in Wells. The day started off sunny-ish but then clouded over and we had THE MOST torrential rain, then just dull and a bit wet. So the latter photos are a bit grey and some, post-downpour, have huge puddles.

The first seven are within the palace walls. The next two are the well pools, on the other side of the moat. And the final two are the fantastic community gardens / allotments, which I think were the former productive gardens for the palace (I was dodging the showers by then and everyone else was soaked and wanted to leave, so it was a bit of a hurried visit!).

We didn't make it into the cathedral (in the background of the latter pics) due to the above sodden-ness - must go back.

Edited to add - spot the bed full of bishops!

A few more from the Bishop's Palace gardens, Wells:

Two mystery plants. One like a gigantic deformed sempervivum, the other I used to know but can't remember - please enlighten me.

    Lovely old holm oak.

Two more from the community gardens, including Mr & Mrs Bishop who appear to run the place.

Bridge across the moat to the well pools, and view across the well pool toward the moat and palace.

And finally, a few (didn't take many) from Sherborne Castle in Dorset.

Just spotted an odd autocorrect in my sentence about the Giverney kitchen. Should have said 'I could certainly live with that kitchen', not 'couldn't'!

    Lovely - thanks, LG.  image

I especially like the misty acer leaves, and the reflective watery photos; but can shed no light on your mystery plants, I'm afraid.

It appears there isn't a dahlia called 'Bishop of Wells'.  I wonder why not?

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Beautiful, LG. I spotted the Bishop's Children dahlias, unless the were the actual Bishop ones.

I wondered if that's what you meant about the Giverny kitchen.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

BL I didn't see all the labels, but the pale yellow one on the right is Bishop of York and I saw Llandaff and Auckland too.

Great pics LG - the Bishops Palace has gone on my "list"image  Love the shady corner ones - particularly no. 6 in the frst batch - who said shady corners were a problem image.  But my absolute favourite is the bridge with the willows - you could frame that one for a wall somewhere, it is magical ✨✨✨
