White spots on japanese acer

Hello

I have just noticed that my acer tree (in a pot) has lots of white spots (a bit like splattered paint) on every leaf and some spots are now getting bigger. The white spots don't rub off but doesn't seem to be any kind of bug or insect. Anyone seen this before and what can I do to help it? (Another acer I had shrivelled up and died recently.)
