Prune Mahonia

i have two Mahonias in my garden but sadly they are a mess!  They are both about four feet high and absolutely nothing up the stem, no branches until you reach the top!  Just little Mahonia trees!  They do flower and just now have tiny brand new leaves appearing.  can i cut the plant right down ie: the main trunk, to try and start again? Its such a shame to cut off what they HAVE got But they really look a mess!

Bodnant Gardens cut their Mahonias down to about 12 inches tall a few years back. They are now back up to their original height and were flowering beautifully. Ours were cut down by a very cold winter some time back, to ground level even, and they regrew, so no problem in pruning.

Thank you Berghill!  Perhaps i will prune them now although i will cringe at taking offthe whole lot with all those new leaves. image

It is nigh on impossible to kill an established Mahonia short of digging out all the roots. It took two men most of an afternoon to do mine  I had already pruned one right down to the base.

The little mahonia plant  I bought about 20 yrs ago  was planted by me in the wrong place to start with. It was too near the fence.  I have now replaced it.
