Can someone recommend a tree for a memorial?

My dog passed away a few weeks ago and we are looking to plant a tree in his ashes as we have a plot for him at our allotment. I'm looking for an outstandingly beautiful tree that can grow in UK weather. High maintenance is ok as we have some experience and no problem looking after it. His colour was described as 'Blue-Grey' so maybe something with this kind of colour would be preferable but not essential.

Thanks for all the help

Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula'... not too big, nice grey colour.

  • Thanks for all the help guys. Its an 'allotment' but its on a piece of land we own and quite open, so not restrictions to height. Soil is ok but can obviously be maintained at an ideal level. Thanks again

  • Thanks for your kind words and advice. I will look into all of these. The height and shade is no problem as although we use it as an allotment its actually on a private piece of land and quite open so its all ok. Soil can be closely watched and maintained so shouldn't be too much of a problem.
    Thanks again

James....very sorry to hear about your dog......but a nice plan for a memorial to him.

If his plot is on an allotment, will there be a restriction on the eventual height and spread for a tree?  I'm thinking of the shade it might cast, the root ball and the water it might take from anything surrounding it?  Will others who have adjacent plots be happy with the plan?  Or are you not looking for anything enormous?  Also, what sort of soil do you have?  I guess pretty well-fed if it's on an allotment.

What about something like the pure white bark of a Himalayan birch, ( Betula utilis var. Jacquemontii )  Lovely tree, airy canopy, doesn't get really huge....and you could plant blue-flowered bulbs/ slate coloured hellebores beneath it?  The bark is stunning all year round.

    Just an idea.

Catalpa (Indian Bean Tree) one of the golden or purple varieties maybe or perhaps Eucalyptus gunnii Azura.
