Dahlias

Hi

I had some Dahlias last summer which I kept in over winter to avoid frost. I left them as they were. One appears to show some signs of new growth. The other looks pretty forlorn. I am pretty inexperienced as a gardner. Just would like some advice how to rescue this beauties back to their former glory.

Thanks!

It's usual to cut the tops off, dry out the tubers then replant next year when they start to shoot, I don't think yours are going to grow now, it's a bit late, tip them out of the pots and see what's going on with the tubers. For the size of the growth from last year, if they do shoot out, they will need a pot twice that size to put in the ground,p

If the tubers are still solid and have not rotted off, start watering gently and put then somewhere warm and light. They will grow.  The tops need cutting off, down to about an inch from the tuber.

    Hi Fidgetbones,

Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry but I am not sure what you mean by "Tuber". Sorry I am a total novice.

    Thanks!

The tuber is what the plant grows from, a bit like a tulip grows from a bulb, the dahlia has a tuber, if you google it you will see them ?

As the others said, tip the pot out and see what is going on, if the tuber is shrivelled up, then start again. You may have to buy another dahlia plant for this year or you may get some cheap tubers at the garden centre?
