My cherry tree has died :'(

Hello
Six years ago we planted a mature cherry tree andfor two years we has beautiful blooms and foliage and since then it's been slowly and steadily dying back with lots of dead branches, I've tried to cut out the dead branches gave the base of the tree a good organic mulch and feed but it was really only the ends of the branches that showed signs of life this year. In my inexperienced optionion I think it's got cankerbecause it has a couple of splits in the bark and I've read other people's threads so I'm convinced I have the same problem.
My Question is as this tree is in centre stage of my small suburban garden i want to replace it with another tree is it best to choose another species will it be effected ? I don't have much room to dig out the stump so I was hoping to bring it down to ground level?
I had thought to replace it with a crab Apple or an Acer.
any thoughts ?
My Garden is 5 meters x 15 meters and I already have a mulberry and a rowan tree with lots of trained fruit trees.

Flowering cherries don't seem to have a very long life and as you say it was 'mature' when you put it in it could be older than you think. An Acer would be nice to replace it with - you could get a small variety.
