Don't bother with the root killer - this plant doesn't regrow from the roots.

Silly question, if they don't regrow from the roots how do they grow? (I'm new to all this)

They grow tassels which produce seed.  They could have had tassels last year and the seed is waiting in the ground to germinate.

Do they come from bird seed? I had several appear in my garden and no idea where they came from ?

Different plants have different types of roots - ones with thick, fleshy or creeping roots often regenerate from them if they are left in the soil. This one has a fibrous root system, and a dense crown. (I presume it held itself together pretty solidly when you lifted it?) It doesn't spread by the roots, and if you remove the crown and at least most of the roots, it won't come back. Whatever is left in the soil will just be tiny feeder roots.

They seed prolifically AnniD. A neighbour might have had one and it will be in several places now if they didn't remove the seedheads!

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
