Potted tulips

Ilona.SIlona.S Posts: 162

Hi all back in Jan I planted some tulip bulbs in a pot ,its the first time i have done this and they came up lovely .If I left them in the pot would they come back .I don't really want to plant them in the ground,as I will probably end up disturbing the summer bulbs I put in .

They tend to diminish year on year ilona, and don't usually grow so well after the first year, but you can certainly keep them in the pot. Give them a feed as the foliage dies down, and tuck the pot out the way for the rest of the year somewhere sheltered and cool, and where they won't get heavy rain on them. I usually add some fresh compost to any of mine that are in pots - at the start of winter, but you can top dress them like that at any time really. image

There's a good chance of them coming back next year but there'll probably be fewer of them.  You need to keep feeding and watering them now to build the bulbs up for next year until the leaves naturally die back.  At that point you can move them to somewhere out of the way which is relatively dry (by a house wall under the eaves is good.)

If you don't need to pot for something else, you could do as I do. Feed, as Fairy said, give them one more Spring, if they're any good, repeat, if not, compost bin asap.
