Clematis wilt

Not sure if anyone can help. My clematis is usually thriving now with lots of new growth and flowers. However all the new shoots that have developed are wilting and it just looks sad. The stems are brown and if you snap them they don't break altogether.  However if it is infelted do I need to cut it right back?

Wilt is quite rare Ryan. It's more likely to to be lack of water as it's been very dry this spring almost everywhere, or new growth that's had a little frost.

What variety is it? What else do you have  growing round about it? If you can upload a pic that will help further. Start with the camera icon - top right.  image

Hey thanks for the reply. We have a few different ones growing but theven ones affected are Montana. We don't have anything growing around them and in previous years they've grown loads.  For some reason it will never let me uploads pictures on here. Tried a few times now

Pix might be too big. They tend not to load well if they're over about 2mb

If they're mature plants, and there's nothing else obvious bothering them, I'd say it's dry ground that's the most likely reason. Poke a finger in round the base and see what it's like. It there's a decent amount of top growth, they need a good bit of moisture to support it. image
