Redcurrant - cocoons on the branches.

Hi,

Hope someone can tell me what sort of pest is bothering my redcurrants. Never seen it before. How should I manage it?

Many thanks

Those are scale insects and the best thing to do is rub them off.  The white showing at one end is a sign that the eggs are about to hatch and young nymphs will soon emerge and move all over the bush, so get rid of them asap.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thank you Bob :) I removed most of them already.  Is there any way of prophylactic measures so they don't come back?

They don't tend to return and it's a bit of a mystery how they get there in the first place I think!
