Thornless blackberry

hello

i have a Oregon thornless blackberry

planted it last year

tied the canes onto horizontal wires along the fence

this year the tied in canes are producing side shoots

also new thick canes have sprouted from the ground

do I leave the tied on canes fruit this year then remove them to ground level and replace them with the new grow canes or cut the new canes off and just keep cutting the shoots off the tied in canes and letting the shoots regrow next year

my father in law has he same plant and he just keeps removing the shoots each year and cutting any new canes from the ground

thanks for any help and advice

mike

Yes, that's the way to do it.  image

It's best if you bundle the new canes to keep them under control while they're growing, as described here.

You should get a much better crop than your FIL image
