Bamboo division

Sam 92Sam 92 Posts: 68

Hi all,

I have a quick question ive recently bought a huge 8 ft fargesia murieale yang or yin bamboo ive kept it in the 40 litre pot it arrived in for now im wondering about dividing it at this time of year? As its very large and i have uses for more in my garden so if i could divide it say today is it best time anything i must take into consideration etc? Id ideally like to get 3-4 clumps out of it but if to much happy with just halfing it and left with two clumps ive attached a photo of said bamboo. I have very little experience with bamboo so any advice much appreciated. If i cannot divide could i dig out a few shoots and re plant elsewhere instead of division? Thanks Sam

Not great on Bamboo but have experience of duelling with it when it's crept underneath fences. From research, Fargesia murieale roots/rhizomes don't creep underground like many Bamboo varieties. They sway towards sending up vertical shoots instead of rapid horizontal spreading rhizomes.

Personally, I'd consider your latter idea on digging up a few shoots rather than splitting the root base. Using a couple of hand forks to tease away small sections off the root edges without slicing through them would certainly help them establish.

Not for the faint hearted, but take it out of the pot and use and old saw and cut right through the whole rootball.

I bought a big pot of Bamboo a few years ago, took it out of the pot and chopped straight down the middle as Hosta says, or I may have used a spade, turned the halves round and did it again so got four pieces out of it.
